How we met...
Joseph's Story:
During the summer of '08, my good friend and college roommate Martin, asked if I would help him relocate to his first post-college job in Brooklyn, NY. A road trip up the east coast in an ole' houpde van with a good buddy was a summer adventure that only a fool would pass up. After traveling north from Georgia and moving Martin into his new place in Brooklyn, a dinner party was arranged by friends in Martin's behalf to welcome him into the city. Mim, Martin's girlfriend at the time (and now wife), asked if I knew of anyone in the city that I would like to invite as my date to this dinner. Being comfortably single, I responded 'no' and 'I will be fine solo'. But following her intuition, Mim invited her friend Beky to accompany me to the dinner. Beky later explained to me that her initial response to this invite was simply 'hmmm okay whatever', she says that on principal she never passes up free food. ha ha ha During the course of the dinner party and subsequent walk home through Brooklyn, I became keenly intrigued by Beky... her experiences, travels, and talents were fascinating. She was very different from the Southern debutantes and sorority girls that I was surrounded by at UGA. At the end of the evening, we exchanged numbers and I explained that I would be in New York City for about a week and so to give me a call if she wanted to hang out. Beky texted me the next day and we met up on her break from work for a quick lunch. Beky was so nervous that she only had two bites of lunch, but we enjoyed each others' company and left with the agreement to try to get together again before I left. A few days passed and then Beky called to ask if I would be interested in riding bikes around Central Park. Beky had planned the most amazing day where we rode bikes around Central Park, ordered pizza and had it delivered to us on the lawn, went to the Strand Bookstore where we each bought a new book, ate at Max Brenner's chocolate restaurant, and then ended the day with a movie at Beky's apartment. By 1:00 am the movie had ended and I had received a hearty first kiss, and so I was happily lumbering back to Martin's apartment to retire for the night. The key Martin provided me flawlessly allowed entry into the building and through the main security door. However, upon reaching door 4B, the key would not engage to unlock the apartment door. After repeated vain attempts to unlock the door and obsessive jiggling of the lock to find a solution, I resorted to panicked calls to Martin's cell and pounding on the door to no avail. Martin's neighbor in 4A peak out the door to see what the ruckus was about, but somehow Martin remained in a deep slumber inside apartment 4B. With visions of sleeping on the streets of Brooklyn, I decided to call the only other person in Brooklyn that I knew... Beky. At 2:30 am my phone call awakens a groggy Beky and the phone conversation went something like this:
Ring, ring, ring, ring.....
Beky: Hullow (yawn)
Me: Hey Beky, this is Joseph... ya know from today.
Beky: uhuum.
Me: Well, I was wondering if... ummm... Can I sleep with you?
[ LONG SILENCE ENSUES]
Me: OH WAIT, I mean, I need a place to stay the night. I am locked out of Martin's apartment and....
For some fortuitous reason, Beky gave me a chance and she provided me a place to stay that night. And ever since we have been together. Mysteriously, Martin never had problems with the lock on apartment 4B again and he claims to this day to have never heard my loud banging on the door. After dating long distance by flying back and forth between New York City and Atlanta for almost a year, Beky relocated here to Athens, Georgia. The rest is history and if you have bothered to read thus far we are pleased announce our coming wedding and hope you will join us to celebrate on July 31st in the north Georgia mountains.
